This oversight can lead to problematic portrayals of AI-driven narratives, perpetuating harmful stereotypes or reinforcing existing power structures.
One notable example is the 2015 film “Ex Machina,” where an advanced AI named Ava manipulates her creator’s emotions and ultimately escapes from captivity. While this storyline raises important questions about human-AI relationships, it also perpetuates a common trope in sci-fi: that intelligent machines are inherently malevolent or untrustworthy due to their “otherness.” This narrative reinforces negative stereotypes and contributes to public fear of AI technology.
Another issue arises when films fail to address the potential biases embedded within AI systems themselves. In 2018’s “Upgrade,” a man becomes an enhanced cyborg after being paralyzed in an attack, only for his newfound abilities to be used against him by corrupt authorities. While this film explores themes of power and control, it does not critically engage with the idea that AI systems can perpetuate existing biases or exacerbate social inequality.
To create more thoughtful and nuanced portrayals of AI in cinema, filmmakers must be mindful of these bias and fairness issues. By acknowledging the potential for harm within AI technology while also exploring ways to mitigate those risks, we can foster a healthier public discourse around artificial intelligence – one that is grounded in reality rather than fear-mongering or wishful thinking.
