Title: ‘Founders Museum’ from White House and PragerU Blurs History with AI-Generated Fiction The Founders Museum, an exhibit commissioned by the Trump administration in partnership with conservative nonprofit PragerU, has left historians perplexed as it raises questions about omitting marginalized voices in America’s history. The museum features 82 paintings of key events from America’s founding and portraits of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. It is housed just steps away from the White House inside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, celebrating the lead up to America’s semiquincentennial next year. The exhibit also includes over 40 AI-generated short videos featuring historical figures like Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and Betsy Ross coming to life to share their stories. These videos are available online and were produced by PragerU. The White House claims that the use of AI in this project brings these people, places, and events to life, making history engaging for Americans across the country. However, William G. Thomas, vice president of the research division at the American Historical Association, expresses concerns about how words and stories of real-life historical figures could be reshaped by their AI counterparts. PragerU CEO Marissa Streit states that these videos were a joint effort between her organization and the White House Task Force 250 to celebrate America’s history. The Founders Museum raises significant questions about how technology is being used in historical representation, particularly when it comes to shaping narratives around marginalized voices. While this project may have good intentions of engaging Americans with their country’s past, the use of AI-generated content risks distorting historical truth and silencing those who were once excluded from mainstream history discourse. As a historian, I believe that it is crucial to approach any representation of history with caution, especially when using advanced technologies like artificial intelligence. We must ensure that we do not lose sight of the real stories behind these figures while trying to make history more accessible and engaging for everyone. The Founders Museum serves as an important reminder that technology should always be used responsibly in historical contexts, ensuring accuracy and inclusivity at all times.
