Title: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Stands with Anthropic’s “Red Lines” Over Military AI Use In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly prevalent in various aspects of our lives, the debate over its use by military organizations continues to intensify. Recently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed his support for rival company Anthropic’s stance on restricting how the military uses AI models. This comes amidst an escalating feud between Anthropic and the Pentagon regarding the latter’s insistence that AI companies allow their models to be used “for all lawful purposes.” The Department of Defense has given Anthropic a deadline to drop restrictions on its AI model, Claude, from being utilized for domestic mass surveillance or entirely autonomous weapons. While the Pentagon claims it doesn’t intend to use AI in those ways, it requires companies like Anthropic and OpenAI to permit their models to be used “for all lawful purposes.” Defense officials have warned that if Anthropic fails to comply with these demands, they could lose a contract worth up to $200 million. In addition to this threat, the government has also considered invoking the Korean War-era Defense Production Act (DPA) to compel Anthropic to allow use of its tools and has simultaneously warned that it would label Anthropic as a “supply chain risk,” potentially blacklisting them from lucrative government contracts. By intervening in this dispute between Anthropic and the Pentagon, Altman’s stance could complicate matters for the Department of Defense if they decide to replace Anthropic should they follow through on their threat to cancel the contract. OpenAI also holds a Defense Department contract alongside Google, xAI, and Anthropic; however, it was Anthropic that became the first company cleared for use on classified systems. In an interview with CNBC, Altman stated his belief that “it’s important for companies to work with the military ‘as long as it is going to comply with legal protections’ and ‘the few red lines’ that ‘we share with Anthropic and that other companies also independently agree with.'” He further emphasized that he doesn’t think the Pentagon should be threatening DPA against these companies. This development signifies a significant moment in the ongoing debate over military AI use, as it highlights growing concerns about potential misuse of technology by government entities. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold and what impact Altman’s support for Anthropic’s “red lines” may have on future collaborations between tech companies and defense organizations.
